Direct Support Professional

Job Description

 

Job Summary:

The Direct Support Professional (DSP) provides compassionate, person-centered support to adults with developmental disabilities in an adult day support setting. The DSP assists individuals with daily activities, facilitates social and recreational programs, ensures a safe environment, and promotes independence, dignity, and overall well-being.


Key Responsibilities:

1. Direct Care and Support:

  • Assist individuals with personal care tasks, including feeding, grooming, dressing, and toileting.
  • Support individuals in daily activities such as meal preparation, exercise, and social interactions.
  • Monitor and assist with medication administration under the direction of healthcare professionals, adhering to medication management policies.

2. Program Implementation:

  • Facilitate and engage individuals in planned activities and programs, including social, recreational, community integration, and educational activities.
  • Encourage participation and promote skill development, independence, and self-advocacy.

3. Behavioral Support:

  • Implement behavior intervention plans as outlined by the interdisciplinary team.
  • Utilize de-escalation techniques and crisis intervention strategies in accordance with established policies.
  • Monitor and document behavioral progress and incidents, reporting any concerns to the appropriate team members.

4. Communication:

  • Communicate effectively with individuals, families, and other team members to ensure consistent care and support.
  • Document daily activities, incidents, and progress notes in accordance with agency policies.

5. Safety and Well-being:

  • Ensure the safety and well-being of individuals by maintaining a clean, organized, and hazard-free environment.
  • Follow all safety protocols, including emergency procedures and infection control measures.
  • Report any safety concerns or incidents immediately to the supervisor.

6. Training and Development:

  • Participate in ongoing training and professional development to enhance skills and knowledge related to care for individuals with developmental disabilities.
  • Attend regular staff meetings, training sessions, and in-service workshops.

7. Compliance and Ethics:

  • Adhere to all organizational policies, procedures, and ethical guidelines.
  • Maintain confidentiality and respect the rights and privacy of individuals receiving support.
  • Comply with all state and federal regulations, including those set by DBHDS (Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services).


Qualifications:

Education: High school diploma or equivalent required. Additional certification in developmental disabilities, human services, or a related field is preferred.

Experience: Previous experience working with adults with developmental disabilities is preferred but not required. On-the-job training will be provided.


Skills:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Patience, empathy, and a genuine desire to support individuals with disabilities.
  • Ability to follow care plans and instructions.


Physical Requirements: Ability to lift and assist individuals as needed, stand for extended periods, and perform physical tasks related to caregiving.


Certifications: CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain within 30 days of hire).


Working Conditions:

  • The position involves working in an adult day support setting with adults who have developmental disabilities.
  • Exposure to individuals who may exhibit challenging behaviors. 
  • Work may include exposure to various activities, including outdoor events, and may require flexible hours to meet the needs of the individuals served.
